MY COLLECTION

My journey into collecting Gibson & Sons pottery began in 2002 with the purchase of my first tea set. What started as a single, much-admired piece soon developed into a dedicated pursuit that continued for the next fifteen years. Over that time, the collection expanded steadily, with pieces sourced from across the UK, New Zealand, Australia, and Canada. Each addition reflects not only the diversity of Gibson & Sons designs but also the enjoyment of the search — discovering patterns, shapes, and backstamps that reveal the company’s evolving production history.

From the outset, I chose to focus primarily on tea sets. This decision was partly practical — pottery collecting can quickly grow beyond expectation — but also driven by an appreciation for the artistry and variation found within Gibson & Sons tea ware. Tea sets offer a fascinating window into design trends, decorative styles, and manufacturing changes across different decades.

That said, like many collectors, I have occasionally strayed from my own rules. A few single teapots, standalone pieces, and several distinctive square teapots found their way into the collection simply because they were too appealing to resist. These “exceptions” have become valued highlights in their own right, adding character and personal history to the broader collection.
